Excess and unwanted hair is a common problem
among women and men. This problem is usually
occurs with women mostly on the face, especially the
upper lip or eyebrow area, at the bikini line, under
their arms or on their legs. Men often have unwanted
hair on their back, chest, neck line and in between
their eyebrows. In many cases, excessive hair growth
is hereditary. Race can also be a factor —
Caucasians are more prone to having excess facial
hair than are Asians and African Americans.
Caucasian women of Mediterranean descent are
more likely to have unwanted hair than women who
have a Scandinavian background. Hormones can
also play a role. Some people experience unwanted
or excess hair from the time they reach puberty;
others find it to be a condition that gets worse with
age. Some women experience additional hair growth
during pregnancy or menopause.

LASER VS. IPL
Spa Catalina uses the most advanced laser cleared

Laser Light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the
hair follicle while your hair in its anagen, or active
phase of growth: The laser/intense pulsed light is
converted into heat, causing thermal damage to the
follicle without harming the surrounding tissue. Hair re-
growth is impeded in the damaged follicle. Laser light
is an intense beam of light that can be used in a
variety of ways to affect the skin. Lasers have a
specific energy source. The wavelength of light
emitted, and the ways the light are delivered are
continuous waves unlike IPL which is different from a
laser light in that it is a range of bands of light rather
than one single wavelength. The IPL light is not
focused which means its strength is less and may
require more treatments than a laser. Lastly, and
most important is our laser has a cool tip which
provides protection for the epidermis. When the laser
energy is delivered through the cooling window, heat
generated in the epidermis is transferred to the
window, decreasing the risk of epidermal damage.

Hair Growth Cycle
Hair grows in three different cycles, anagen, catagen
and telogen stage. The only time the hair ;has a
nutrient blood supply is in the anagen, or active
growth state. Subsequently, the only cycle in which
you can effectively kill a hair follicle is in the anagen
state.
.Another advantage to a laser YAG is its wide
treatment area, enabling patients to be treated
rapidly. In fact, approximately 100-200 hairs can be
treated with each flash or pulse. Sessions can last
from a few minutes to less than an hour, this depends
on the size of the area being treated. The number of
treatments required depends on several reasons
related to specific skin types which is color type,
thickness and density of hair. The setting is adjusted
to customize to any skin type and any body
depending on the individual treated. Treatments are
fast, non-invasive, comfortable and there is literally
no "down-time". Subsequent sessions are scheduled
when the hair begins to regrow. The timing for this
can range from four to eight weeks.
